Fiberglass Saddlebags

What is fiberglass?

Fiberglass is made from the same glass used in windows. Molten glass is forced through openings finer than the head of a pin, creating threads that are then woven together. Resins are added to the fiberglass so that it can be molded. The finished product is lightweight and heat-resistant.

The automotive industry uses fiberglass mixed with resins for auto body parts. Fiberglass used in bodywork can be matched for seamless repair and easily sanded and painted. When used in motorcycle saddlebags, fiberglass creates a cargo carrier that is weatherproof and more deterrent to break-ins and theft than leather bags.

Fiberglass care and maintenance

For cracks and holes in fiberglass saddlebags, Oates ABS plastic pipe glue can be worked into the damaged area. It is thick, dries without heat, and needs little sanding. Many manufacturers suggest using Bondo, which is a fiberglass tape mixed with a quick-curing resin.

To maintain fiberglass saddlebags that are exposed to weather elements, use a fiberglass wax that protects from UV damage. Wax should be applied at the regular intervals suggested by manufacturers. For existing damage, wax is a quick fix that temporarily restores the beauty of the fiberglass. Oxidation causes pits in the gelcoat of the fiberglass. Fiberglass polish works similar to wax, but also rubs off some of the oxidation to restore shine. Polishing compounds can remove heavier oxidation, but a wax must be applied afterwards to protect the surface.

Strength and beauty

Fiberglass saddlebags offer strength and durability. These carriers complement bike styles. Hard bags covered with leather offer a classic look to motorcycle luggage. Look for models that include installation hardware, a quality latch-and-key security system, detachable features, chrome trim, and carpeted interior to protect your possessions while traveling. Some of these hard saddlebags offer air-compressed lid support systems for easier opening.

Fiberglass saddlebags range in sizes, with models large enough to store two helmets and jackets.
