The legend begins
The first single-cylinder Harley-Davidson Motorcycle was built in a backyard shed and entered in a Milwaukee motorcycle race in 1904. The next year, a dozen more bikes were produced in that shed. In 1909 V-Twins offered double the power on hills and speeds of 60 mph, and factory sales jumped to over 1,100 bikes. By 1914 Harley-Davidson dominated motorcycle racing, manufacturing over 16,000 motorcycles that year.
Harley-Davidson builds heavyweight bikes designed for cruising the highways, with special emphasis on customized chopper-style bikes. For bikers who take to the roadways, Harley saddlebags make it easy to haul the necessities.
A matter of luggage
Deluxe and luxury leather saddlebags range in sizes up to extra-large. Metal rims, rivets, and reinforcements make for sturdy saddlebags, and quick-release buckles provide easy access. Roomier luxury saddlebags have built-in lock and security systems, sturdier frames, decorative hardware, and bolt-in-place options. Many manufacturers reinforce the wheel side of the saddlebag with unbreakable plastic.
Leather Harley saddlebags come in slanted designs. Hardware, riveted stress points, quick-release buckles, and a removable shoulder strap are some of the design conveniences. Look for rot-proof stitching in any bag style, as well as detachable features, and mesh inside pockets.
Convenience and style
Detachable saddlebags are convenient. Some transform into wheeled luggage, with throw-over or hard-mount styles. Studded and fringed bags come in regular and slanted styles. Touring saddlebags have exterior mesh pockets to hold water bottles, cans, and other items frequently accessed; they are spacious and have security locks and quick-release features. Rugged imitation leathers are also available.
Some Harley luggage serves as both back support and storage, with a rigid core that supports hundreds of pounds of pressure. They withstand all weather changes. Hard saddlebags and fiberglass designs have lids that open from the top, as well as chrome lock and key systems. They are available in black, white, and silver. Mounting hardware is usually standard. Some styles have built-in turn signals; others come with reflectors. Styling complements motorcycle designs.
