Leather Saddlebags

Buying tips

So, you've decided on leather saddlebags for your motorcycle. It is important to consider how the saddlebag is mounted: throw-over bags secured with ties to the underneath of the seat and the shocks, or bolt-on saddlebags, mounted with Ghost Brackets that allow you to remove saddlebags in seconds. You will never be able to leave your bike unattended if you purchase saddlebags without secure locks. Quick-release buckles give easy access to the items in your saddlebag.

Saddlebags with reinforced metal frames increase strength and reduce sagging. Rigid bags are customized cargo carriers with a leather exterior supported by stiff plastic inserts or a metal frame. If the saddlebag is adorned with metal studs, make sure they are made of stainless steel to avoid rusting.

Choosing your leather

To distinguish man-made leathers from natural cowhide, look inside the saddlebag. Cowhide will appear rough; a smooth interior could be imitation leather. Proper dyes and conditioners protect and fortify the leather. Treating leather with a shiny, acrylic finish might weaken the leather.

Leather thickness is important. Cheap leathers can sag within three months. Leather thicknesses under 0.25 inches thick are not an indication of a high-quality bag. Imperfections in leather should not fall near seams or stress points, and stitching should be done with string the thickness of kite string, free of loose edges. Stitching should be recessed so that it wears better. Leather lacing is not as strong as sewing and it often leaks.

Caring for your leather

Leather should be cleaned, conditioned, polished, and protected. Use a clean cloth to apply a recommended leather cleaning solution diluted with water. Strong solutions can damage the color of the leather. The leather should then be lubricated with a thin layer of oil to keep the leather moisturized. Polishing gives leather a glamorous look. Choose a polish that will not clog the pores of the leather; clogging pores can dry out leather. Finally, waterproof your leather saddlebags to protect them from the elements.
